Standard and Enhanced DBS

A Basic DBS can be run on anybody, for any purpose, however, Standard and Enhanced can only be run for certain roles conducting specified activities.

A brief explanation of both checks can be found using the links below:

Standard DBS

Enhanced DBS

To run a Standard or Enhanced, you need to ensure you have collected the appropriate consent from the candidate - this is a different consent form from the Basic DBS consent. You can contact us for advice on creating a new application form with the correct consent included.

When submitting a Standard or Enhanced, you need to provide a job role within PRO. Due to the strict rules around eligibility for these checks, EBC manage the job roles to ensure that DBSes are being requested correctly. You can raise a CHAT ticket in PRO under the category "New Standard/Enhanced DBS Job Role". This will ask some questions to help evidence what the person will be doing, which helps to assist in assessing the eligibility of a particular role.

Standard DBS

Examples of suitable roles for a Standard DBS include Fire and Rescue Authority employees, Court Officers and persons working in an FCA-regulated role. To confirm whether a role is eligible for a Standard DBS, you can use this link to review the types of roles eligible, and the relevant legislative wording to support this.

Enhanced DBS

Examples of suitable roles for an Enhanced DBS include those working in Healthcare, Education and Social Care. Enhanced DBS can be split into the Child Workforce, Adult Workforce, and Child and Adult Workforce. There are also Childs Barred Lists and Adults Barred Lists that can be included. To confirm whether a role is eligible for an Enhanced DBS, and to determine the workforce and barring lists you can use the below links to review the legislation and wording.

These links also show the barring lists guide on which roles are eligible for barred lists.

When assessing if a role is eligible, you can also use this link which is an eligibility checker. It does not cover all roles, but is a good tool to give you an idea of which level of criminal check could be requested.

EBC are here to help guide you, so if you have any questions on this process, please do reach out to us and we will be happy to discuss all things DBS with you!
